The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office has just over 300 employees.  The County Attorney is responsible for prosecution of all felony cases and presentation of cases to the Grand Jury; prosecution of juvenile delinquency petitions; litigation of child protection cases; establishment of paternity and collection of child support; commitment of mentally ill and chemically dependent persons; provision of civil legal advice to the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners and all County departments and officials; and representation of the County in all civil lawsuits.
 
The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office hires student law clerks and interns who have a genuine interest in a public law practice. Student Law Clerk Positions


We offer two types of positions for student law clerks:  regular and summer positions.  Law clerks are considered unclassified positions.  The application and hiring process for student law clerk positions is coordinated directly by the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office.

 

Law Clerk Job Description

Regular Law Clerk Positions

The Ramsey County Attorney's Office employs approximately 25 part-time regular student law clerks throughout the year.   The tenure of law clerk positions ends approximately six months after law school graduation.  Four to six student law clerks are hired each year.

Candidates interested in applying for a law clerk positions must provide the following documents:

Recruitment notices are periodically posted with the placement offices at the law schools in the Twin Cities area.  Candidates must be second or third-year law school students and eligible to work 16 to 32 hours per week. The current entry-level salary for law clerks is $17.03 per hour.  Candidates selected for an interview will be contacted by phone or email.

Student law clerks must be certified student attorneys under the Minnesota Supreme Court Rules as they make regular court appearances.

Summer Law Clerk Program

The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office sponsors a summer law clerk program.  Ten to twelve law students are hired to work as law clerks for a ten-week period, 40 hours per week from June through August.  To be eligible for this program, a student must have completed his or her first year, or preferably second year, of law school.  Students in this program have an opportunity to attend trials, hearings and other case events, and to conduct legal research.  The current salary for the summer law clerks is $17.03 per hour.

The primary recruitment for this program is completed seven to nine months prior to the summer program through the Minnesota Minority Recruitment Conference and On-Campus Interviews at the four local law schools.  Interviews are also held at the Office of the Ramsey County Attorney for applicants who are not attending law school in the Metro area.

Unpaid Academic Internships

 

The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office occasionally has unpaid academic internship opportunities available for students such as those in a paralegal program who have completed their first year of school or are in their second year of school.
