Commissioner Bennett's Bio
Commissioner Bennett is a life long resident of Ramsey County. Tony grew up on the East Side of Saint Paul where he attended Johnson High School and went on to attend the University of Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas where he studied business management.
But Tony’s real love was in law enforcement, where he served the public for 26 years as a Saint Paul Policeman. Tony patrolled Rice Street for 21 of those 26 years, as a Saint Paul Policeman. While in the police department he served our community in the Minnesota Legislature for 1970 – 1974 and again from 1982 – 1990 where he become Chairman of the House Commerce Committee.
Tony left the Minnesota House in 1990 when he was appointed United States Marshal for the State of Minnesota, a position that he held until 1994. Tony’s public service was not complete; in 1996 he ran for and was elected to a seat on the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners. Since being elected to the board Tony has been re-elected in 2000, 2004, and 2008.
Tony’s Commissioner District, district one, represents the Cities of Shoreview, Arden Hills, Vadnais Heights, North Oaks, White Bear Township, Gem Lake and parts of Mounds View, Spring Lake Park, and Blaine. While on the County Board Tony has held many positions from Facilities Chair, where he oversaw the construction of the Law Enforcement Center, Public Works facility and many other county projects. Tony served seven years as the Budget Chair where he worked with his colleagues, staff, and community leaders to prioritize vital county services and keep the county’s property tax levy increases to a minimum.
In addition Tony has served on several outside boards. He chaired the Metro Mosquito Board in 2003 & 2004 and the Metro 911 Board in 2004. The Commissioners of all 87 counties in Minnesota also elected him President of the Association of Minnesota Counties; he now sits on its Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of County officials as well as the Vice Chair of their Justice and Public Safety Committee.
