The Detention Program detains and houses juveniles ages 10-17 who are charged with committing an offense and there is reason to believe:
-
they would endanger themselves or others
-
they would not return for a court hearing
-
they can not remain in the care and custody of their parents
-
their health or welfare is in immediate danger
A Typical Day
Staff-facilitated Discussions - Staff choose an educational topic to address the needs of individual residents. Topics introduce new information and perspectives and include discussion. These meaningful exchanges between staff and residents nurture relationship-based authority to provide a sense of safety and security in the JDC.
Physical Exercise - Every day, residents participate in recreation activities that encourage large muscle development, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility and balance. JDC has a large, full-court gymnasium and a smaller gym with weight lifting equipment. There is an enclosed, courtyard where residents can participate in activities outdoors. Yoga is offered to the residents and is provided to JDC by an organization of trained Yoga instructors who work with high-risk populations.
Leisure Time - Residents are allowed to play card games, watch TV, play board games, or socialize. The staff monitor this time carefully, being aware of negative attitudes, potential disagreements and antisocial discussions. Often these interactions are learning opportunities and allow staff to teach positive social skills with peers and adults.
Reading Time - JDC has an extensive library of videos, workbooks, and reading materials on issues facing teenagers. Six evenings per week, each Pod designates the last half hour of the day to quiet reading time.
