A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system for capturing, storing, analyzing and managing data and associated attributes, which are spatially referenced to the Earth’s surface. -Wikipedia
GIS has been incorporated in many projects that have been completed by the RCD, for example, GIS has been used to determine the location of historic wetland sites, inventory and map shoreline information, and determine watershed boundaries.
In addition to mapping and storing information, GIS can also be used to create 3D visualizations and online mapping browsers. The Ramsey County GIS User’s Group, which is a collaboration of municipalities, Ramsey County GIS, watershed districts, and the RCD, hosts on online mapping service located at http://maps.co.ramsey.mn.us/mapramsey
