About the County Courthouse
The building opened in 1932 and is an American Art Deco “Skyscraper Style” building. The Art Deco emphasizes dramatic lighting, geometric progression of spaces, clean and crisp dramatic lines including light fixtures, stair railings, door handles, etc. The building features 23 kinds of woods from 18 countries and marbles from all over the world. The building combines a county court house and city hall where government functions take place including policy decisions, day-to-day administration for both the City and County and court proceedings.
Tours
Self-guided tours, walk-in tours and tours by appointment are welcome during the hours of 8:00 – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Tours run from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on choice of attractions.
Tours can consist of all or any of the following segments:
- Memorial Hall
- Vision of Peace
- Mayor’s Office
- Council Chambers
- Meet with Council Member
- Meet with County Commissioner
- Visit with Sheriff’s Department K-9 Officer
- Empty Courtroom
- Meet with Judge
- Walk through tunnel and view river, Harriet Island and Raspberry Island
- Lower Level history of St. Paul/Ramsey County etched glass light show (12 minutes)
- Law Library on 18th floor
- Woods tour (23 varieties from 18 countries)
