WIC’s goal is to help participants prevent and correct medical problems such as iron deficiency anemia, low birth weight babies, certain birth defects, obesity, osteoporosis, poor growth and other problems. A nutrition screening is done to determine education needed. This screening includes weight, height, hemoglobin assessment, dietary assessment, and a health history questionnaire.
Nutrition education with a qualified nutrition educator (for example, with Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians) is provided to address the specific nutritional needs of each WIC participant. Topics covered with WIC participants include nutrition during pregnancy, weight gain during pregnancy, anemia, nutrition for infants and children, weaning from the bottle, and breastfeeding.
