Permit to Carry

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office Gun Permit Unit handles all new and renewal permits to carry firearm applications as mandated by the State of Minnesota. As part of the application process, this unit conducts a rigorous background investigation on each applicant. If any criminal record or possible public safety concern is discovered, the applicant’s file is assigned to an investigator for additional follow-up. If no record or concern is discovered and applicant qualifies under state law, a permit to carry a firearm is issued.

The Gun Permit Unit also ensures that current permit holders retain their eligibility to carry a firearm. The tasks performed by this unit make certain that those people issued a permit to carry are not criminals, dangerous individuals, and meet the statutory requirements.
