Matt Bostrom was elected Sheriff of Ramsey County on November 2, 2010, and took office on Monday, January 3, 2011.
Matt sought the Office of Sheriff based upon a vision for law enforcement and public safety that encompasses the following:
- Providing safety through community policing
- Restoring trust through fiscal responsibility
- Collaborating with local law enforcement
- Encouraging diversity to reflect the community
- Improving service through technology
- Connecting with youth to build for the future
Sheriff Matt Bostrom has nearly 29 years of law enforcement experience at the Saint Paul Police Department with service as Police Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Commander, Senior Commander, Chief of Staff, and Assistant Chief of Operations, Division of Homeland Security and Support Services. Other assignments have included positions as the Mayor’s Public Safety Liaison, Investigator, Information Systems Director, Training Director, and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator.
Matt received his formal education at Northwestern College (Bachelor of Science), the University of St. Thomas (Master of Education and Saint Paul Public School Teaching License), and Hamline University, where he earned his Doctor of Public Administration degree. Matt is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and a certified State of Minnesota Emergency Manager.
Matt authored The Influence of Education on Police Officer Work Habits and co-authored The United States Department of Justice: Character-Based Police Officer Selection. Additionally, he is an Adjunct Professor at Saint Mary’s University, Northwestern College, and Hamline University.
A native of Saint Paul, Matt grew up near Lake Phalen and graduated from Johnson High School. He is a member of the leadership team at CrossCultural Church on the East Side. Matt lives in Saint Paul’s Lowertown with Cheryl, his wife of 28 years. They have three adult children: Emily, Grant, and Luke.
